A crown reduction is an alternative to removing a tree which one may feel is getting too large for the area in which it is situated. No more than 25% of the foliage should be removed in one growing season in order to maintain the health of the tree. The tree is reduced in overall size, at the top and sides as well. Branches are cut back to sustainable growth; the crown is thinned along with the removal of dead and diseased limbs. This method reduces the risk or hazards such as falling dead limbs or storm damage. A more manageable tree is created which makes a safer tree and safer area around the tree.
